Three…Two…One…Baby Blastoff! Do you remember Emily from our most recent #MompreneurMonday post? She has been kind enough to offer a giveaway for JustaBXmom readers! Yay, Emily!
Emily was also kind enough to send JustaBXgirl her own She-Rex shirt. I’m sure you’ve seen it on Instagram. But if you haven’t, don’t worry. I will flood you with photos in a moment. In case you missed the original post from Emily and didn’t want to get distracted from the words giveaway by going to the #MompreneurMonday link above, let me fill you in with some info about Baby Blastoff!
Emily started Baby Blastoff! in 2012 as an alternative to the gendered messaging running rampant in children’s apparel. She wanted parents to have choices when dressing their children realizing that options were needed. Baby Blastoff! doesn’t get stuck on boys being blue and girls being pink.
I remember last summer being in line at a children’s store with JustaBXgirl. She had picked out a shark bathing suit from the boys section. At the time, she didn’t like wearing bikinis and wasn’t that into one pieces. She liked the shorts and shirts that the boys section offered. While standing in line, the woman in front of us turned around and started innocently chatting like people do while waiting their turn. In the midst of the friendly dialogue, the woman stated to JustaBXgirl that she couldn’t get a boys bathing suit. I was LIVID. Who did this woman think she was? It took me a moment and I had to remember that I was breaking culture. I was allowing my child to be comfortable in what she wore. After a silent tirade, I smiled and said, “actually, she can and will be getting this bathing suit because she likes sharks.” The woman didn’t have a rebuttal. She turned around and continued waiting in line in silence.
Up until that moment I didn’t realize how ingrained gender messaging is. I mean, JustaBXgirl has been wearing “boy” shirts since she was a baby. I also started realizing how different the cut of each is when it seemed like shorts for girls were so much shorter than those for boys. Why is that?
I know I’m grateful for brands like Baby Blastoff! We all know that JustaBXgirl is a glitter loving, dress wearing, pink princess. Did you also know that she is a TMNT following, dirt digging, dinosaur roaring, basketball dribbling diva? Yup, she is.
A few months ago she came to me very sad and told me she could no longer watch the TMNT because they were for boys. I asked her where she heard such foolishness from and she told me from her cousin. Our children learn what we teach. If we tell them something is for boys/girls they believe it and pass the message on. It took some convincing from me but now she is back to choreographing dance moves to their theme song.
I rely on brands like Baby Blastoff! to reiterate what I’m teaching at home. You can be interested in anything you want. You also don’t have to choose. You can love trucks and tiaras. That’s the message I get when I think of Baby Blastoff! I also love the opportunity to support a woman-run American company.
Here are a few photos of how JustaBXgirl chose to style her she-rex shirt. The she-rex design is available on the Baby Blastoff! site as a bodysuit. Don’t be jealous we received a custom shirt LOL.
And now what you’ve been waiting for…giveaway info. You can win a long sleeve t-shirt for your little one from this section of the Baby Blastoff! website. Here are a few of the options available, including my favorite. Can you guess which one is my favorite?
