Looking for something fun to do this holiday season? I got you covered. NYC is a fabulous place to live year round but there is something magical when December comes around. I also know that with holiday break coming up in a few weeks parents will be looking for things to do with their littles. Here are a few of the things we have been up to and a few we can’t wait to check out.
Pillowland – You know the Laurie Berkner Band song. You’ve read the book. Now go see the show. This is immersive theater for littles and JustaBXgirl loved it. The littles in the audience get to travel with the cast to Pillowland. This is perfect for tiny littles up to around seven or eight.
Yeti, Set, Snow – We are hoping to check this show out over winter break. It is currently playing at Central Park’s Swedish Cottage. We saw a show there a few months ago and really enjoyed it. This story sounds sweet and perfect for this time of year. The story is one of friendship over the first day of snow.
Harry Potter: History of Magic – This exhibit opened in October at the NY Historical Society. It is AMAZING. If you have anyone in your life that enjoys the Wizarding World of Harry Potter they must go to see this. It is more inclined to please the older fans as it is a museum exhibit with limited touching parts. I can see smaller littles not being as excited but those of wizarding age (11+) can get a lot out of it. Now, if you’re littles are precocious like mine you should still consider taking them. I’m hoping to take JustaBXgirl soon. My favorite part was reading the handwritten notes on manuscripts from J.K. Rowling.
Cirque Dream Holidaze – We stayed out late on a school night to see this. It was completely worth it. With twenty acts it is difficult to choose a favorite because they are all so good. I’m serious, the performers are really talented. I love exposing JustaBXgirl to different ways to use her talents. Shows like this show her that performances don’t only have to look one way. The show is coming to NJPAC at the end of the month (December 26thh and 27th) and JustaNJmom will be getting the chance to check it out there. Let us know if you will be heading over the bridge to check it out too. It runs for two hours and because of the time, I suggest this for the tweens, teens and, adults in your life more than the little littles.
The Emperor’s New Clothes – WIth a running time of one hour this is perfect for those little littles but will still entertain some tweens. Growing up The Emperor’s New Clothes was a favorite story of mine. Seeing it on stage with the NYC Children’s Theater brought back my love of it and introduced the story to JustaBXgirl. I love that the performance also includes other fairytales. I wondered how they would connect them but I should have known that they would find an awesome way. As always the talent at the NYC Children’s Theater is fabulous and it is a great place to introduce children to the theater.
Liberty Science Center – Okay, so this one isn’t actually in NYC. It is actually in NJ but it is accessible by public transportation and so much fun. We’re actually going to be heading out there in less than a week to check out some of the new exhibits. If you see us on your visit make sure to say hi! We’re looking forward to checking out the new Doc McStuffins and Sherlock Holmes exhibits. I’ll make sure to share the info on them with you after our visit.
Bronx Zoo Membership – We have had a membership to the Bronx Zoo since JustaBXgirl was six months old. You’ve heard me rave about it countless times before. This place never gets old. And next year, the dinosaurs will be back. I always push the membership because if you’re going to visit more than twice the membership pretty much pays for itself.
Macy’s Santaland – For us the Christmas season doesn’t really exist until we’ve had the chance to visit Santa about a hundred times. Visiting Macy’s Santaland is a tradition that I look forward to having as long as we live in NYC. I will force, bribe and blackmail my child to come with me when she is a teenager. Santaland truly makes you feel like you have left the hustle and bustle of midtown and journeyed to the North Pole. And if you’ve been scared away hearing about long lines please know that now you must make an appointment to visit Santa at Santaland so that takes away the line. Coming from someone that used to spend over an hour waiting in the line, even if you have to wait it is still worth it!
PianoPiano – Having a piano in your home for the holiday season is magical. Imagine hosting holiday parties and being able to impress your family and friends by playing Christmas carols on the piano! I know, you’re thinking it sounds good but why would you buy a piano just to have it for one month out of the year. Thanks to PianoPiano you can rent one. They deliver it and tune it for you.
