January Bookshelf – Set Reading Goals

We received some of these titles for review purposes. As always, all opinions are honest and my own. This post contains affiliate links.

We love books. We just got back from a trip to the library today and JustaBXgirl has already finished one of the books she checked out. This is the time of year when we all pledge to be better than we were. I’m going to advocate for you to read more books this year. A lot of us are planning to spend more time at home and by now, you’ve probably binged through most of the shows that you’ve wanted to see. In fact, if you’re not sure where to start with reading, you can always pick up a book that your favorite movie or show was based on. While you figure out which to start with, let me suggest some of what is on our bookshelf this month.

Natural Remedies for Your Home & Health – During the last few months, I have fallen in love with essential oils. JustaBXgirl calls it me mixing my potions when I whip up an oil mixture for whatever is ailing her at the moment. This book was a wonderful addition to my shelf. The recipes are easy to follow and I love the best blends lists suggested.

Mi Communidad! My Community! – This book is bilingual. JustaBXgirl began Spanish lessons a few weeks ago so I love adding books like this to her reading lists. It allows her to read the story in English and then look at it in Spanish and connect the words. The diversity in the book is beautiful and is a fun way to open dialogue about community with littles.

Opal Lee And What It Means To Be Free – This is such a great way to introduce Juneteenth to children. It is a great reminder that no matter what we will always find joy. Even her family’s new home being burned down didn’t stop them from celebrating. We will always rebuild. Juneteenth represents freedom. Opal Lee reminds us that none are free until all are free.

The Magical Girl’s Guide To Life – This book called to JustaBXgirl as soon as I took it out of the mailbox. We live life believing that magic is all around us so that made adding this to our bookshelf a no-brainer. This book is fun because it has a little bit of this and a little bit of that. It has personality tests. Don’t front, you know you love a good personality quiz! It has writing prompts. It has mantras to help you feel your most magical. It makes a great gift for an anime or manga loving teen or young adult that is looking to understand their own magic.

Make Your Own Money – Danny Dollar – You already know we love some Ty Allan Jackson books. While I haven’t gotten to read this one yet, JustaBXgirl has been devouring it. She was so hyped reading it that she started writing a new business plan before even finishing it. This type of book is so important for our children. Not only does it given them representation, it also gives them financial literacy. Every kid doesn’t need to be a boss but they do need to be given an opportunity to understand the role that money plays in our world.

Positive Thinking Journal – A 365 Day POSITIVITY Journal – This journal is beautiful. It is created with young people in mind but honestly can be used by all ages. It gives daily prompts as well as having coloring pages and other opportunities to express yourself. It reminds us to be kind to ourselves. It reminds us to be grateful. It is also a gift to ourselves to look back at it once it is completed and see that no matter how rough the year was there was so much good to be found.
