This month is a little different than what we usually have. Not as many children’s movies, unless your littles are like my child and enjoy documentaries. Don’t worry though, you should still add these to your watch list. You won’t regret it.
Summer of Soul – I have lived in NYC my entire life. I have spent time in Harlem since I was a child. I have listened to musical artists like Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder since I was a little little. Even still, I had never heard of the Harlem Cultural Festival that took place in the summer of 1969. Thanks to historical recordings and the genius of Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, we get to feel like we were there! You can bring home the award-winning documentary or stream it on DisneyPlus.
Rumble – I really enjoyed watching this movie with JustaBXgirl. It is a really fun movie with a really powerful message. This is “When you believe it, you can achieve it,” brought to your screen. I’ve seen a few reviews saying that it wasn’t that good and I’m really wondering if we saw the same movie. It had comedy, drama and lots of laughs. And it is a kids’ movie.
Uprooted – The Journey of Jazz Dance – This is the month for debut directors. Khadifa Wong is a talent to be reckoned with. I learned a lot about jazz and loved the evolution. It is not only a love letter to the art form but a commentary on the political and social influences that are shaping it today.
